Urban Portraits // 3B Media • Inspiring Photography Workshop – a great success!

This week Rob Booker, Phil Barber & myself ran our first 3B Media ‘Inspiring Photography’ workshop, called ‘Urban Portraits’.  We’ve been planning it for quite some time now and it turned out to be such a fantastic day! At the Round Foundry Media Centre near Leeds’ Granary Wharf we brought together 2 models, a make-up…

Stef Jones - Well done to 3B Team, fantastic day and amazing images too! Great day.

Olivia Brabbs - Great work boys – looks like an fab day with some amazing results…

Christopher Campbell - Hey Barnaby, Was nice to meet you this weekend at the Woodlands. Quite interested in the next workshop, and would like to hear your tips on post production and Adobe Lightroom. Would you be covering those subjects again as I know you discussed that in the first workshop?

Cheers
Chris

Barnaby Aldrick - Hey Chris – great to put a name to a face at the Woodlands fair dude! We’ll be running pretty much the exact same course on May 18th and October 5th, which an afternoon module dedicated to post production. Though the focus on the course is more about the Urban Portraits, and we’ve plans to run a full-on post-production course in the near future all about workflow & getting the most out of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Catch you around sir! B

Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour // video by Barnaby Aldrick

My girl Clare is Strictly Come Dancing OBSESSED.  Ever since the season finishing in December she’s been somewhat lost and listless, pining for It Takes Two.  I won’t lie it’s actually quite good telly, watching boxers stumble over their own lead feet, seeing Bruce Forsyth gradually go completely senile and watching the tasty professional dancers…

Vicki & Simon // Harrogate Wedding at The Old Swan • by Barnaby Aldrick

The second of my Christmas weddings was a Harrogate wedding celebration for Vicki & Simon, who’d married New York back in December. The weather was snowy, but not quite as snowy as it had been in Central Park where they married OUTSIDE, in the exact spot Simon proposed! I love that you can marry wherever…

Simon - Great set! I love the shot of Grandad in the chair. What’s that on your camera? video light?

Barnaby Aldrick - That’s a Canon ST-E2 wireless flash transmitter. It triggers my flashguns, which I’ll put around the room when the light is low. I’ll have used it for the Grandad shot too; placing the flash off camera, pointing up to bounce off the roof & using the ST-E2 to spot meter off Grandad face. Cheers for the comment.

Simon - Aha never seen those before. I’ve never tried spot metering with flash before – must give that a try. I guess you must have to move the focus point manually over the face, rather than centre-spot-and-recompose, or it wouldn’t work?

Barnaby Aldrick - It’s all about the ‘Flash Exposure Lock’ with canon flashguns. In the same way you’d spot meter & recompose, you flash meter (same * button) off a neutral part of the scene, with subject over the middle focus point (flash can be on or off camera, ideally pointing towards a white roof/wall) and then it sends the correct flash to light the subject. If you’ve set the exposure for ambient (eg 1/40 @ 800ISO, to get some ambient exposure), the flash lights the subject accordingly. Once you start flash metering, flash becomes a hell of a lot less random!

Simon - Thanks a lot for the tips, I’ll have a fiddle around with mine and see how it works out. I use the back button to focus, so it will take some nifty thumbmanship…

Barnaby Aldrick - I use the AF-ON button on my 5DmkII to focus too, and the shutter only to meter & shoot. Once you flash meter it stays in the memory for 10 secs; so generally I flash meter with the central focal point>focus>recompose & snap.

Olivia Brabbs - Beautiful work Barnaby… Love the vintage theme and all the personal touches.

Barnaby Aldrick - Why thank you my darlin! Thought you’d like the vintaginess. Ta for the love! x

Simon - That’s very clever, I hope my D700 can do that too, cheers again B. Sorry to turn the comments in to flash-nerdsville, back to your photos…

Mike Galley - Fantastic Barnaby I do like your work, I Love the shot of the old gent in the chair.

Barnaby Aldrick - Cheers Mike! Very kind of you to say so. B

3B Media & Randall Network // Urban Portraits [photography by Barnaby Aldrick]

Back in October we had a cheeky Randall Network catch-up at TGI’s in Leeds for photographers who’ve rallied under Stewart Randall‘s photographic umbrella.  It was a social really, and lots of fun getting together with like-minded creatives. Afterwards we 3B had planned to meet our Urban Portraits workshop models to do a little practice shoot…

Sharyn & Maurice // Winter Woodland Wedding • Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

The Christmas period is a great time to have a wedding.  People are in good spirits, are generally on holiday and have the new year to look forward to. Plus you sometimes get snow! I had had a busy Christmas period, shooting 3 weddings – The first of which was with Sharyn & Maruice at…

30th Gangsters and Molls birthday photobooth // photography by Barnaby Aldrick

I recently turned thirty and last night celebrated this milestone with a good pal of mine, the lovely Jennie Chapman, who’d just turned 25. Cos fancy dress not only is fun but breeds fun, we decided to make it a Gangsters and Molls themed knees up. The theme could be liberally interpreted, and I was…

Dom Dwight - Now then

Stumbled across your site while googling something Leeds related and got stuck here for ages having a good read. Good to see you’re doing well and just wanted to say that, great as your photos were when we worked together, your new stuff is in another league old pal – really beautiful work.

These days I only really flirt with booking photographers but it’s becoming more of a regular part of the job, so I intend to give you a buzz the minute something appropriate comes up.

Here’s looking at you kid

Barnaby Aldrick - Double D – Of all the blogs in all the towns in all the world, you walk into mine!

Great to hear from you captain and nice to see you’ve enjoyed snooping through my blog! You may notice a bunch of Leeds Guide work up there to dust off old memories. I hope things are going well for you in Harrogate. It’d be cool to work together sometime. Give me a shout if there’s anything I can do for you. Take it easy squire, Barnaby

Gangsters & Molls: Barns 30th! » Phil Barber Photography - [...] My good friend Mr Barnaby Aldrick had a significant birthday the other day when he left his twenties and started his journey into his thirties. Seems such a long time ago for me now! Anyway to celebrate the passing of such a milestone he held a Gangsters & Molls fancy dress party at the Adelphi in Leeds. It was a joint affair with the amazing Jennie Chapman celebrating her 25th birthday. I had a wedding that day so didn’t join in the celebrations until quite late by which time things were in full swing. They had a great local band called Rebel Yell and if you get a the opportunity you should check them out. Probably one of the fun parts of the night was that Barns set up a photo booth for everyone to capture alot of the fun and frolicks of the evening. Needless to say I got involved as the image above shows. I would like to say for the record ‘ I have no idea where the hat or the cigar came from!’ Checkout some more images from the evening below.
