Larry McMahon // 5DmkII Glidetrack video • Barnaby Aldrick Photography Blog

My snapper buddy Mr Barber showed me this short film his Irish mate Larry McMahon shot on his Canon 5DmkII. He filmed it at Shackleton Mill in Ireland and set it to John Murphy‘s 28 days later theme, giving it a haunting, menacing quality. I basically wanted to show it on my blog cos it’s ace, and inspired me cos it was shot on the camera I use.  The thing that really makes this video (as well as the cool location and creative composition) is that it’s all been shot on a ‘Glidetrack‘, which is basically a mini ‘Dolly’, or...

Leeds Guide Magazine // behind the scenes for food and fashion • by Barnaby Aldrick

Last week I hit the streets of Leeds on Leeds Guide magazine duties, assisted again by my knowledgeable homie Ben Spear of Spear Design As promised (dear readers!) I vowed to shoot a couple of behind the scenes pics to show how I get what I get on location with limited gear. Today I’ve got a food and a fashion shoot for y’all… Starting with a beautiful Japanese ‘Yaki Soba’ Norman’s in Leeds made by this chap. I can’t decide which I prefer – I like the close up details and depth of field of the above… … but like...

Helen & Richard // Pre-Wedding Shoot • Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

One misty morning last week I joined an old pal Helen & her partner Richard for their pre-wedding meeting in York. I’ve known Helen for years and she’s had me booked pretty much since she started dreaming up her big day! It’s always a little different shooting people you know. But these two made my life nice & easy. They’re getting married next month at the Fairfield Manor and it’s all starting to get exciting. Richard had his eye on this little seat. Clearly just wanted a sit down and a snog. Once upon a time I used to work...

The farce is strong with this one // Cedric Delsaux’s Dark Lens – by Barnaby Aldrick

Stumbling around on’t internet I happened upon a gallery of images by a chap called Cedric Delsaux. …it took me a moment to spot the significance. Cedric Delsaux is a stunning French photographer with a wryly amusing take on life. He’s recently created a series called The Dark Lens, where he’s photographed ordinary daily scenes and added a touch of the Star Wars universe. I love how adding a crashed X-Wing fighter (geek alert!) into the demolition/wartorn building, giving it a sense of stupidity. I always wanted one of these imperial AT-ATs. Thought I reckon they’d be pretty slow off...

Nina & Mark // OTD Wedding Slideshow – by Barnaby Aldrick

Last Saturday I shot the Ukrainian wedding of Nina & Mark round Bradford, Yorkshire.  I shot a ‘Ukey’ Wedding before (check the blog here) & really enjoyed all the fun traditions. There were family blessings in the morning, wedding party vodka shots, clipping safety pins into clothes for luck, an entire ceremony in Ukrainian, throwing of vodka at the wedding party, walking under cakes, drinking vodka with every guest, traditional Ukey dancers, more vodka drinking, more dancing, and so forth (generally + vodka).  As expected, it was a hoot. But I thought I’d share with y’all a little feature of...

Jonas Peterson // A moving tale – by Barnaby Aldrick

A Swedish friend of mine sent me a link to a Swedish wedding tog living and working in Australia called Jonas Peterson.  I just had a nosey through his excellent wedding blogsite (which made me wanna buy one of those not-so-cheap tilt & shift lenses…) and had a link to an interesting Q&A section about his style/tips. But in his site in his personal ‘about me’ chat he was describing his inspiration & wrote: “Eight months ago I brought my camera to work as usual and I shot what was going on around me the way I always do. Then...

Honey, I shrunk the kids! // photography by Barnaby Aldrick

I noticed that I blogged every day last week! I think it’s great to keep updating the content on here so there’s a reason to come back and see what’s new. The Barnaby Aldrick Wedding Photography blog began life and is still very much a portfolio for my wedding clients to see recent work.  An ‘official’ website is very much a static thing, containing info & highlights of ones work (generally from the time the site was built) and although content can be updated it generally only shows highlights.  In wedding photography, this shop window may not be representative of...

Hope & Social at the Studio // The Sound Gallery visit the Crypt [by Barnaby Aldrick]

Last week Phil Barber, Rob Booker & I joined our pals Hope & Social at the Crypt where they’re in the process of recording their second album. They’ve done various creative gigs and events at the Crypt before and for some reason had a feeling it was in a romantic hamlet on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.  It turns out it’s nestled in the urban sprawl in Liversage, on the way out to Bradford.  But the church itself is a beautiful old thing, and for a good few years, Hope & Social have hired the underground ‘crypt’ and converted...

Leeds Guide Magazine // Recent food & drink faves • by Barnaby Aldrick

After yesterday’s spring roll snaps I thought I’d post some actual food & drink photography I’ve shot for the Leeds Guide recently… It’s quite the challenge to make food look appetising.  Especially as I can’t fake it by painting things with varnish and piping mashed potato into a McFlurry cup.  I literally turn up at a restaurant, with an hour window and my fingers crossed that the chef’s in and the manager is aware I’m coming; then wait for a random dish to be plated up for me to photograph. It’s always quite exciting, cos food & drinks ‘dies’ fast...

If at first you don’t succeed // Come Dine With 3B! • by Barnaby Aldrick

Myself + Clare, the less attractive thirds of 3B•Media (Phil Barber and Rob Booker) & their respective better halves have decided to throw a Come Dine With Me extravaganza in the next month or so. For those of thee who don’t find themselves stopping their channel hop when they pass Come Dine With Me, it’s basically a low budget reality show where a bunch of weirdos cook at each others houses and mark it out of ten, while the voice over dude takes the mick. We’ve decided to do something similar, for the craic & I’ll let you know how...
