Video networking in a brave new world // by Barnaby Aldrick

In the spirit of my last post about my pre-wedding video shoot, I yesterday hooked up with local two movie maker pals Will Simpson & Chris Robson for cake & caffeine at the Tiled Hall Cafe in Leeds Library.  Whereas most of the 5DmkII-owning stills photographers I know are, to different degrees, dabbling in a brave new world of HD video & the moving image, there’s been an equal and opposite shift of film-makers moving from the movie & broadcast world towards the DSLR. Many pro-togs, often already armed with fantastic low-light, wide-aperture glass, are now able to get stunning...

Carly & Joe // my first video Pre-Wedding shoot! – by Barnaby Aldrick

As a wedding photographer, it makes a change to go to a wedding as a guest. Last summer Clare & I joined our pals Rob & Nikki at their wedding, and instead of shooting stills, I decided to road-test the HD video on my 5DmkII. As their wedding gift, I used iMovie to butcher together a fun summary of their most excellent wedding day, set to One Day Like This by Elbow (available here).  Check out the video on the blog here or in HD at Vimeo here. Now, although I’ve started to do many more professional video projects with...

Vickee & Andy // OTD Wedding Slideshow – by Barnaby Aldrick

Last Friday we crossed t’Pennines to join Vickee & Andy for their big day in Lancaster.  It was the coolest wedding & the warmest day we’ve enjoyed in a while… Check out what was outside Andy’s house when I dropped Clare off!  Not one vintage VW, but three!  Happy days. They got married at Ashton Memorial, proudly sat on the hill overlooking Lancaster.  [There's more info about the memorial in their pre-wed here] I love this one Clare shot of them walking out. I’ve seen worse backgrounds! Afterwards we drove (me with them in the Samba Camper!) through the simply...

Vickee & Andy // Pre-Wedding Shoot • Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

A few weeks back I hooked up with Vickee & Andy to nosey around Lancaster for their upcoming wedding this Friday. They’re getting married at the Ashton Memorial, in Williamson Park on the top of the hill overlooking Lancaster.  It’s a stunner of a location, in a beautiful park with 360 degree vistas all the way to Morcambe Bay & has a mean stairway.  It was built back in the early nineteen hundred by millionaire industrialist Baron Ashton in memory of his second wife, Jessy, a la Taj Mahal. At around 100 feet tall, it dominates the Lancaster skyline and is...

Michelle & Martin // OTD Wedding Slideshow – by Barnaby Aldrick

Yesterday I joined Michelle & Martin to photograph their Papakata tipi wedding in Halifax! How cool is that?! They had their ceremony down the road from their house at Clayhouse Park… … and afterwards travelled in Campervan convoy to a field they borrowed from a friend of theirs; containing a specially erected three-pronged Nordic Tipi!  Inside were fires, a bar, 2 chill out zones, a circle of dining tables, a dancefloor & a kitchen, and loads of cool lights and floral arrangements. How much does the above pic look like some 60s festival?! During Michelle & Martin’s hog roast (which we also...

To Tweet or not to Tweet? // Twitter explained – A users guide by Barnaby Aldrick

What are your feelings on Twitter? Here are my thoughts and an introduction for the uninitiated… I remember when myspace came out, the world shrunk that little bit more and new walls fell.  Suddenly you could be friends with Radiohead, write them a message and have Thom Yorke reply to you personally.  Without managing to sound too flowery, for a while (and still with some bands) technology allowed the layman to touch the stars.  Not long in, band management wised up to marketing opportunities and put PR & marketing in charge of their facebook / myspace pages. Twitter caused similar...

Kelly & Pete // Fountains Hall Pre-Wedding Shoot – Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

It’s been pre-wed central at BAWP HQ these past weeks, meeting clients to talk through their big day and loosen them up in front of the camera. One of my latest victims was good pals Kelly & Peter who are getting married soon at Fountains Hall at Fountains Abbey near Ripon… It was blazing sunshine throughout logistical discussions and the moment I switched my camera on, it began to drizzle! Good ol’ England. Mother Nature knows too much… The pressure was on, as Peter Boyd is in fact a photographer himself.  He even kindly guested as 2nd shooter at one...

Martin & Michelle // Pre-Wedding Shoot • Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

T’other day I joined Martin & Michelle for their pre-wedding meet at their house, where I met the other member of their family… Harvey! Clare & I are about to move into our first house and we’re thinking of getting a dog to keep me company.  We’re thinking of a Beagle, cos they look mint.  But it’s always interesting seeing different breeds of dogs.  This solid box of a bulldog was a proper grandad of a dog.  Even breathing normally he sounded like he was snoring through a pleasant dream.  Apparently he falls asleep standing on the side of a...

The Temper Trap // Live Music Photography – by Barnaby Aldrick

Tonight Clare & I are off to see the Aussie alt rockers Temper Trap play at the Leeds o2 academy tonight.  I think they’re seriously good, and have really hit the big time this past year.  They really stood out when I first heard them rocking the Leeds Festival last year… One perk of shooting for The Leeds Guide is the free all-access Leeds Festival press pass each year.  I love photographing music, and do so alot around Leeds, but there really is nothing like shooting the first 3 songs of about 50 bands over a weekend on (and here’s the...

Clever art // Barnaby Aldrick Wedding Photography

Super quick post > I was looking for recipes on how to make bread n’ butter pudding and spotted a side ad selling art prints.  This print caught my eye… How good is that?!  Can you see what it is? The title gives it away: ‘Mona Lisa Remix’.  I love how its clever, original & slightly silly. Low tech meets high brow.  I love art that plays on the how the senses work.  It’s also pretty mad how the gaps between the dots flash up an optical illusion of a black grid that disappears when you look at it.  I...
