Leeds Guide cover shoot // The Sunshine Underground • By Barnaby Aldrick

The first shoot on this week’s Leeds Guide brief was a cover shoot with the up-and-coming Leeds band The Sunshine Underground.  They’re one of the headliners for the upcoming Live at Leeds festival on May Bank Holiday weekend (30th April>3rd May 2010) and a lot of the next Leeds Guide’s will be promoting the fest.  I caught some of it last year and it’s a pretty sweet festival, running all over Leeds at pretty much all the music venues around. The Leeds Guide wanted these chaps to be in front of a recognizable Leeds Music venue, so we met them at...

Tasty food, tasty processing // Food Photography by Barnaby Aldrick

Another food shoot I did recently was with Dine Catering Services. They asked me down in association with the Leeds Guide to pap a bit of their food. What appears here to be a little cherry tom is actually a baby toffee apple. Cheeky. A swanky hazlenut crusted yorkshire goats cheese with matchstick apple & mustard seed combo. Sliced artichoke on fish something or t’other. I should perhaps do my research before trying to name these. But the point of this post was really for this image. I was playing with it in photoshop & ran a few slightly wacky...

Getting High in Leeds // Sky Plaza Student Flats • by Barnaby Aldrick

My student halls, ‘Broadgate Park‘ at the University of Nottingham were like a young offenders institute (in some blocks for more than aesthetic reasons); with ship-like safetyglass door, frigid bare-brick stairwells bursting with unloved bikes and asymmetrical lino kitchens criss-crossed with snail trails. A recent job took me to an altogether different pile of bricks, up in the sky. Not long since finished, Sky Plaza hold the *ehem* lofty (sorry) claim of being the tallest student housing in the WORLD at 37 storeys and 103m high. In other accolades, I also stumbled upon it online on the ‘Bad British Architcture...

Leeds Guide Magazine // behind the scenes for food and fashion • by Barnaby Aldrick

Last week I hit the streets of Leeds on Leeds Guide magazine duties, assisted again by my knowledgeable homie Ben Spear of Spear Design As promised (dear readers!) I vowed to shoot a couple of behind the scenes pics to show how I get what I get on location with limited gear. Today I’ve got a food and a fashion shoot for y’all… Starting with a beautiful Japanese ‘Yaki Soba’ Norman’s in Leeds made by this chap. I can’t decide which I prefer – I like the close up details and depth of field of the above… … but like...

Leeds Guide Magazine // Recent food & drink faves • by Barnaby Aldrick

After yesterday’s spring roll snaps I thought I’d post some actual food & drink photography I’ve shot for the Leeds Guide recently… It’s quite the challenge to make food look appetising.  Especially as I can’t fake it by painting things with varnish and piping mashed potato into a McFlurry cup.  I literally turn up at a restaurant, with an hour window and my fingers crossed that the chef’s in and the manager is aware I’m coming; then wait for a random dish to be plated up for me to photograph. It’s always quite exciting, cos food & drinks ‘dies’ fast...

Leeds Guide Magazine // Corn Exchange Spring Fashion Shoot • by Barnaby Aldrick

I was approached a week or so ago by the Leeds Guide Magazine editorial team to shoot their upcoming spring fashion feature.  They’d booked the Corn Exchange (mentioned in my last post, as the place where I technically became a professional photographer!) and were looking for models.  On our recent 3B Media Urban Portraits training workshop we’d recently used our stalwart models Stef & Alex, so we asked them on board.  It was great of them to get involved too, cos they’re so easy to shoot Last time we did a similar feature was an Xmas party clothes shoot with...

Leeds Guide Magazine // Recent & past faves • by Barnaby Aldrick Photography

Bonjourno chicos! I shot another Leeds Guide last week and got up to all sorts of fun stuff. One feature was shot in House of Fraser, where a Bobby Brown makeup artist made LG sales mentalist Lucy’s eyes all smoky. Looks cool eh?  And yeah yeah, I know I spelt smoky wrong on the pic.  D’oh. As I keep repeating, food reviews are my fave part of the whole LG experience, and this issue had loads of em. First stop, Call’s Landing on the Riverside.  A fine looking warehouse building that would make an amazing studio flat. In the Halloweeny...

Leeds Guide Magazine // Past Faves • by Barnaby Aldrick Photography

I was out on Leeds Guide duties today, shooting features for issue 234. What are the odds that the day I photograph a famous Saville Row tailor in his favourite £3K suit, that I leave the flat in a dash in last nights mud caked jeans? After shooting the tailor in a fancy Leeds Restaurant, I bounced off to snap a chaps city flat, swung by the excellent Sandinista to photograph (& eat) an amazing Mediterranean seafood stew for the ‘Chef Special’ feature, before heading off to the afternoon’s Curry Awards, to document (& again, eat!) the best starters &...
