Last week I joined Kirsten + Paul for their pre-wedding practice shoot at Sandburn Hall, near York.
It’s the first time I’ve visited this place, and though conveniently just off the A64, is in a lovely rural spot on a lake and surrounded by woodland and a golf course.
These guys aren’t avid golfers, they just loved the outdoorsy location, rustic lodge-type hall for the wedding reception and brilliant cottages buried in the nearby forest
After meeting at the hall, we took a little snoop around inside…

Then we got cracking on the practice photoshoot!
I like to put all my couples through a practice shoot just to show them how it feels to be photographed by me.
It almost always makes the couples I shoot realise the portraits aren’t something to worry about
And having already done it ahead of their big day, makes it quicker and easier for all of us on the big day.
Which ultimately means more time to party with the guests!
Kirsten & Paul are outdoorsy types, and have both worked in jobs that keep them out in nature, so were more than happy to take a stroll into the nearby woods
I always like this angle for solo portraits!
The highlight of the shoot for me was visiting the giant pine forest!
These trees were immense!
I’ve always wanted to shoot a couple in a location like this…
… and weather permitting, we’ll head in on their big day for a few snaps too!
It was so nice to join these guys to catch up and discuss their big day plans, and in spite of being wet underfoot and the dreary overcast weather, we got a great set of pics and I think we’re all limbered up for their impending big day!
