Vicki & Simon // Harrogate Wedding at The Old Swan • by Barnaby Aldrick

The second of my Christmas weddings was a Harrogate wedding celebration for Vicki & Simon, who’d married New York back in December.

The weather was snowy, but not quite as snowy as it had been in Central Park where they married OUTSIDE, in the exact spot Simon proposed!

I love that you can marry wherever you please in the States, instead of ‘duly sanctioned places’ in the UK. Though getting married on the beach or in the woods in Scotland doesn’t have quite the same appeal as it does in California…

So – Vicki & Simon had a fun vintage theme throughout, and the grand Victorian Old Swan hotel worked perfectly:

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickI like this sequence of Vicki getting into the dress, with Simon popping her ring over her lace gloves.

I don’t often post or get pics of me at work, but as Clare & I were together shooting the same preps, she caught this one of me!

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickI believe this is the shot I took:

A tasty detail of Vicki’s floristry, gloves and ring:

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickThe gang again, who soon-after made a dubious and entertaining attempt at the CanCan:

I like these relaxed portraits of Vicki & Simon

And this cheeky sequence:

We used this cool peeling green garage door round the back of the hotel for some cool portraits.

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickBack inside they had a red carpet lineup for dinner guests, who stopped into the lounge for a quick slideshow of New York pics.

I really liked the NYC photos too, so it was nice to add the UK leg images.

My blogs can get a bit long, so to save strain on the ol’ broadband, click (more) below to see the full post…Vicki had really gone to town on the vintage dining room theme.  They’d been buying old grannified crockery from car-boot sales and had all sorts of amazing details.  All around the room were sweet bowls, candles, lacey touches and ornate frames of their New York wedding pics.  It was really intimate, and a nice way to have a meal with nearest and dearest before the evening celebration!

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickMmmm, muffins! ‘Eat me!” – Cute.

Somehow, I resisted.

All the old china teacups had lace wrapped baubles with the name of the guest on them (this one says ‘Bride’).

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickI love this home-made guest book!  Inspect if you will beneath NY…

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickAfter dinner and before the evening guests arrived, I popped out for a dusky shot of the snowy Old Swan

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickProbably my favourite snap of the day was of Grandad who’d found a most excellent doorkeepers chair to chill on! Love it.

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickThis geezer was pretty cool too, givin it DSLR & snappy matching shirt & tie. Go on.

Vicki & Simon at The Old Swan, Harrogate Winter Wedding Photography by Barnaby AldrickIt was great to see Vicki & Simon’s lovely pals Emma & Stewart again!

I photographed their awesome wedding at Rudding Park a few years back and it was great to catch up!

Simon - Great set! I love the shot of Grandad in the chair. What’s that on your camera? video light?

Barnaby Aldrick - That’s a Canon ST-E2 wireless flash transmitter. It triggers my flashguns, which I’ll put around the room when the light is low. I’ll have used it for the Grandad shot too; placing the flash off camera, pointing up to bounce off the roof & using the ST-E2 to spot meter off Grandad face. Cheers for the comment.

Simon - Aha never seen those before. I’ve never tried spot metering with flash before – must give that a try. I guess you must have to move the focus point manually over the face, rather than centre-spot-and-recompose, or it wouldn’t work?

Barnaby Aldrick - It’s all about the ‘Flash Exposure Lock’ with canon flashguns. In the same way you’d spot meter & recompose, you flash meter (same * button) off a neutral part of the scene, with subject over the middle focus point (flash can be on or off camera, ideally pointing towards a white roof/wall) and then it sends the correct flash to light the subject. If you’ve set the exposure for ambient (eg 1/40 @ 800ISO, to get some ambient exposure), the flash lights the subject accordingly. Once you start flash metering, flash becomes a hell of a lot less random!

Simon - Thanks a lot for the tips, I’ll have a fiddle around with mine and see how it works out. I use the back button to focus, so it will take some nifty thumbmanship…

Barnaby Aldrick - I use the AF-ON button on my 5DmkII to focus too, and the shutter only to meter & shoot. Once you flash meter it stays in the memory for 10 secs; so generally I flash meter with the central focal point>focus>recompose & snap.

Olivia Brabbs - Beautiful work Barnaby… Love the vintage theme and all the personal touches.

Barnaby Aldrick - Why thank you my darlin! Thought you’d like the vintaginess. Ta for the love! x

Simon - That’s very clever, I hope my D700 can do that too, cheers again B. Sorry to turn the comments in to flash-nerdsville, back to your photos…

Mike Galley - Fantastic Barnaby I do like your work, I Love the shot of the old gent in the chair.

Barnaby Aldrick - Cheers Mike! Very kind of you to say so. B
