Charity Graphic Design // NSPCC Hats On Luncheon • by Barnaby Aldrick

I’ve a pal who works for the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) charity and she recently asked me if I’d be willing to do a bit of graphic design for their next swanky Hats On event at York Races.

At the moment their committee only need 2 different cover ideas for their invite.  I had a little think and a dig through my photo archives and was coming up empty, so  I emailed my pals at the Randall Network (a network of forward thinking UK wedding photographers) to see if anyone had any images of posh hats. The lovely Alison of Alison Groves Photography had a root about and sent me the image below!  Could a photo be more apt?  Posh hats in front of possible horse racey fences?!  Genius.  Alison – you rock!

For the second idea I wanted something a bit different, and love ANYTHING art deco, so drafted the following:

I’m not sure which I prefer, but rather like both!  So I thought I’d share with the blog.

Which do you prefer?

Kelly Mitchell - I like the deco one the best, personally, in the terms of the best design for a invitation but maybe the first one is more apt. That probably doesn’t help though, sorry.

Barnaby Aldrick - I think I feel exactly the same way about it. I prefer the art deco chic, but think the other’ll probably be more suitable. I love anything art deco.

Emma in London - Second one is gorgeous

Ali - Ha!! You are funny!!! x

Christopher Campbell - Hey Barnaby! My first post here, but have been watching your blog for a while. Me and the Fiancé fell in love with your photography a while back after seeing some of your work posted on facebook. We’ve made up our minds for using you for our wedding photography 100%, and when the time comes, you’ll no doubt be hearing from us.

Anyway back to the subject; Being a graphic designer, here is my take on the two. The top one works better in terms of composition and layout, and has a more balanced feel. I do think it could use some tweaking, maybe just in terms of the typeface used. Maybe avoid the black stroke on the lettering and keep the font to a solid colour, even if it’s just black, or maybe try and using the eyedropper tool and selecting a colour from the hats? The bottom poster is very creative and illustrative, but feel it lacks the direct communication that the top poster has. The image is very nice, with striking colours, which could focus the eye away from the information that is important to those who see it. Thats just my opinion and my take on them both, but they are both great in their own way. Will be following on here and posting more in the future. If you need any advice or criticism feel free to give me a shout :)

Take care.
Chris

Barnaby Aldrick - Hey Chris! Thanks for such a lovely comment. I’m still waiting to hear from NSPCC about which design they prefer. Gotta love that charity bureaucracy!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your comment. I look forward to hearing from you and your fiancée one day! All the best, Barnaby
