Last Saturday I joined Vicki + Pete for their Autumnal wedding photos at Victoria Hall in Saltaire, a fascinating UNESCO industrial village near Shipley in Yorkshire!
Vicki & Pete hosted a wonderfully relaxed day, dispensing with loads of traditional formalities. Pete didn’t have any groomsmen, he collected Vicki from her preparations and they walked down the aisle and back together. Later they didn’t follow traditional speech patterns or have a cake to cut, they just wanted time with their guests to celebrate their union after being together for 15years! And in spite of the ‘fall’ weather threatening rainfall all day, it all came together brilliantly, against the backdrop of this fascinating UNESCO-listed Industrial model town!
I love the story behind Saltaire too. Sir Titus Salt, one of Victorian Britain’s wealthiest and most philanthropic industrialists in the mid 1800s, relocated his textile mills to a purpose-built model village near Shipley on the River Aire (hence “Salt-Aire”). He provided workers with stone houses (much better than the slums of Bradford at the time), wash & bath-houses, a hospital, schools, recreation and education buildings, parks, allotments & a boathouse. A Strict Methodist, Salt created an environment where people could lead ‘healthy, virtuous, godly lives’, though at the cost of a ban on boozin’, as Titus forbid ‘beershops’! There are bars there now, including the excellent Fanny’s Ale & Cider House and amusingly named called ‘Don’t Tell Titus’ bar (as well as the brilliantly named hairdressers ‘Salthair’)!
Today Salts Mill displays the world’s largest collection or work by Bradford-born artist David Hockney and is a fab day out, and it made for a brilliant Yorkshire wedding venue for this special day; brilliantly managed by Becky and the Victoria Hall team!
